Sevilla ace emerges as top Manchester City target

Manchester City are giving serious thought to pursuing highly rated Sevilla defender Diego Carlos this summer, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Pep Guardiola has made signing a new centre-back a top priority this summer after City relinquished the Premier League title to Liverpool in devastating fashion.

Napoli ace Kalidou Koulibaly has been heavily linked with a move to City in recent weeks and is even available for a cut-price £65m deal this summer having being valued in the region of £100m only 12 months ago.

Koulibaly is regarded as one of Europe's best defenders but Napoli are finally ready to sell in order to fund their move for Lille striker Victor Osimhen.

While the Senegal international would be a huge upgrade on City's current options, the fact Koulibaly turns 30 at the end of next season is clearly off-putting.

It is why City are weighing up other options, including Diego Carlos, who only joined Sevilla from Nantes in a £13.6m deal last summer.

The 27-year-old has quickly emerged as one of the best defenders in LaLiga this season and has previously been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Sevilla would be reluctant to lose Carlos so soon and will demand considerably more than what they paid for the Brazilian if City firm up their interest with something concrete.

With Champions League football secured for next season, albeit potentially through the play-offs, Sevilla know they are also in a strong position over Carlos' fee.

The Brazilian centre-back has notably completed 77.8% of his attempted tackles in LaLiga this season and has two goals to his name in 32 league appearances.
