Manchester City target on verge of agreeing new Napoli deal

Manchester City have been served a blow in their pursuit of Pepe Reina with news the veteran goalkeeper is on the verge of signing a new Napoli deal, reports Gazzetta dello Sport.

Pep Guardiola was keen on reuniting with the Napoli goalkeeper this summer and the Premier League outfit have already had a £2.5m bid for the former Liverpool man rejected.

The move signals the end of Claudio Bravo’s time at City after just 12 months at the club but Guardiola may now be forced to look elsewhere for a new No.2 with Reina on the brink of securing a one-year extension.

Reina has entered the final 12 months of his current Napoli deal but there has been a breakthrough in discussions and now the 34-year-old is poised to sign a new deal that runs until 2019.

City have already made Ederson the most expensive goalkeeper in British football this summer but Guardiola is keen to sign another man between the sticks to provide competition to the 23-year-old.

In the last two Serie A campaigns only Josip Posavec (7) has committed more errors that have directly led to an opposition goal than Reina (5).
