West Ham vs Manchester United lineups: Sanchez, Lingard and Valencia out but Pogba starts
As expected, Paul Pogba starts for Manchester United at West Ham for the first time since Jose Mourinho claimed that the Frenchman will never captain the club again.
After footage was released showing a clear disagreement between the two in training it was unclear as to whether the midfielder would be dropped following last weekend’s stalemate with Wolves, after which Pogba stated that he wanted the side to “attack, attack, attack”.
United have undoubtedly been a stronger side when Pogba has been involved since returning to the club, winning just half of the 22 matches that he has not started and earning a modest 1.77 points per game in his absence compared to an improved 2.02 in his 60 starts.
Elsewhere Luke Shaw returns to the side at left-back, with Antonio Valencia missing out through injury, meaning Ashley Young switches to the right of the defence and captains the side. Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard also miss out on the squad altogether, with Anthony Martial preferred to Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay making his first league start of the season.
For the hosts, Marko Arnautovic returns to the side having missed the stalemate with Chelsea. It was the 11th league game that the Austrian has not started since signing for the club last summer, with the Hammers coming out in just two of said matches, averaging fewer than a goal per game.
Other than their top scorer’s return, West Ham remain unchanged from the 0-0 draw with the Blues last weekend.
