Manchester United have announced Axel Tuanzebe has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with an option to a further 12 months.
Tuanzebe’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of next season and United have moved to secure the 21-year-old’s long-term future.
Tuanzebe spent last season on loan at Aston Villa and played an important role in the club’s promotion from the Championship.
Villa head coach Dean Smith is keen to re-sign Tuanzebe this summer but the youngster will first have the chance to catch Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s eye in pre-season.
Solskjaer is prepared to head into the new season without signing a new centre-back and blood through Tuanzebe into the first-team.
“I have grown up at Manchester United and it has always been a big part of my life and my family’s life,” he told the club’s official website.
“I appreciate the trust that the club has in me and I want to repay that with my performances on the pitch.
“I know I have a lot of hard work and learning ahead of me but the experience I gained throughout last season puts me in good stead for the future ahead.
“I am determined to give everything and show everyone the player that I can be. I can’t wait for the tour to get started and to see what the upcoming season brings.”
Tuanzebe is the second academy graduate to pen a new long-term deal on Friday following United’s announcement about Andreas Pereira’s future.
United also managed to tie down Marcus Rashford’s long-term future at the start of the month, as the Red Devils focus their attention on the future of the club.
Tuanzebe made 27 league starts for Villa last season and returned a steady WhoScored rating of 6.75 in that time.
