Premier League pair monitoring United defenders

Arsenal could make a move for Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling in January, reports the Sunday Mirror.

Smalling was recently criticised by manager Jose Mourinho for not playing through the pain barrier, though it has since emerged that the defender had sustained a broken toe.

The 26-year-old and teammate Luke Shaw have been less than impressed with Mourinho’s comments to the media of late, which could escalate in the coming weeks.

Any supposed row could rekindle Arsene Wenger’s long-standing interest in Smalling having tried to sign the England international from Fulham prior to his switch to United.

And despite the club’s capture of Shkodran Mustafi, Smalling remains on Wenger’s wanted list with a possible move on the cards in the New Year.

Shaw, meanwhile, would attract interest from Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp hoping to boost his left-back options.

Alberto Moreno has flattered to deceive in the position, with Klopp turning to midfielder James Milner to play the role.

However, deals between Liverpool and United are rare and it’s likely that Mourinho would veto any possible Shaw sale to the Reds.
