Napoli sign Manchester United target

Napoli have confirmed the arrival of former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente on a free transfer.

Llorente has been a free agent since the end of last season after being released by Tottenham.

The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United earlier in the summer as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku.

Napoli have been monitoring Llorente’s future all summer and have finally made their move after accepting defeat in pursuit of Inter outcast Mauro Icardi.

Icardi is deemed surplus to requirements by new Inter manager Antonio Conte but the Serie A giants have struggled to offload the Argentina international.

Various clubs have made it clear they are willing to match Inter’s valuation of Icardi, reportedly in the region of €65m, but Icardi has snubbed all advances, in hope of joining Juventus.

Llorente, who spent two years at Juventus until 2015, has struggled for regular playing time in the last few seasons after playing second fiddle to Harry Kane at Tottenham.

The 34-year-old played a direct hand in just 11 goals in 52 league and European appearances over two seasons for Tottenham.
