Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed the club turned down a huge offer for Thomas Muller from an unnamed club this summer.
Muller had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, but saw their attempts hit a dead end after the club declared they would no longer do any business with them following the sale of Bastian Schweinsteiger.
“I’m talking about figures which were very high indeed,” the Bayern president told the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper “If I were a bank manager then I would have had to accept it.
“But as a football club we allowed ourselves to close the door on it, and this door is remaining closed. I can promise that to everybody.
“But one thing is for certain, in view of the increased television money in England things are not going to get any easier for Bayern in the future.”
Louis van Gaal is thought to have been keen to reunite with the Germany international at Old Trafford this summer, as the former Bayern manager sought a marquee player that would transform United into genuine title contenders.
It was Van Gaal that promoted the 25-year-old into the Bayern first team in 2008 and he hasn’t looked back. In fact, since 2009, only Stefan Kiebling (94) and Robert Lewandowski (93) have scored more Bundesliga goals than Muller (76).
