Matthaus urges Arsenal and Manchester United target to stay in Germany

German legend Lothar Matthaus has urged in-demand RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano to reject interest from Premier League pair Arsenal and Manchester United and instead continue to ply his trade in Germany. 

The French defender has a little over a year left to run on his current deal with RB Leipzig and has been linked with a £50m move away from the Bundesliga outfit. 

Indeed, Arsenal and United are courting the 21-year-old, who has also been attracting watchful glances from LaLiga giants Real Madrid. 

RB Leipzig currently sit third in the Bundesliga, five points off league leaders Bayern Munich, and secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League before all football was suspended due to the global Coronavirus pandemic. 

And with RB Leipzig shining under Julian Nagelsmann, Matthaus believes Upamecano would benefit from another season or two in Germany. 

"I can see him playing for all the big clubs when he gets more experience," Matthaus told Sky Sports in Germany via the Standard. 

"He's a young player, highly rated, fast, has a good positional game and uses his body well for a 21-year-old. But a year or two in Leipzig would not hurt him. 

"Leipzig are a top team - one of the last eight remaining in the Champions League. 

"I can still see one or two per cent where he can learn, but he's a huge player and that's why I'm not surprised that top clubs in Europe are after him." 

Upamecano has made 21 league starts for RB Leipzig this season and has garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.23, that enough to feature in the Bundesliga best XI of the campaign so far.
