Turkish giants expelled from European competition

UEFA have confirmed Galatasaray’s appeal against their two-year ban from playing in European competition has been rejected.

Galatasaray were suspended in March for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules but Turkey’s most successful club side had hoped to have their ban thrown out on appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 20-time Super Lig champions had only managed to qualify for the Europa League next season after winning the Turkish Cup, but Osmanlispor, who finished fifth in the league, will now replace them in UEFA’s second-tier competition.

Galatasaray’s sixth place finish last season was their worst finish in a league campaign for five years (8th – 2010/11).
