Manchester City have earmarked Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl as a top transfer target and will firm up their interest at the end of the season, claims The Daily Mirror.
Pep Guardiola’s side are closing in on a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred and are already looking to further bolster their central midfield options.
Weigl is widely regarded as one of the most promising midfielders in Europe and has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the past.
City signed Ilkay Gunodgan from Dortmund in 2016 and now want to complete a second raid of the Bundesliga giants for the signature of Weigl.
The 22-year-old’s current Dortmund deal is not due to expire until the summer of 2021 and Peter Stoger’s side will reportedly hold out for as much as £40m if they are forced to cash in.
Of Dortmund players that have made at least five Bundesliga appearances this season, Weigl averages the most tackles per game (2.5).
