Manchester City target flattered by Guardiola interest

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred admits he is flattered by Manchester City’s interest amid suggestions he will link up with Pep Guardiola at the end of the season.

City wanted to sign the Brazilian midfielder in January but reluctantly accepted defeat as Shakhtar categorically ruled out his departure midway through the season.

Guardiola is determined to land the 24-year-old ahead of rivals Manchester United and appears to have the edge over Jose Mourinho after Fred talked up the Spaniard’s credentials.

“Of course, it’s always good to get compliments. It’s a sign of acknowledgement, that we are doing a good job, that we are on the right track," he told The Daily Mirror after scoring in Shakthar's 2-1 win over Roma on Wednesday night.

“Coming from people like Guardiola, now one of the most acknowledged managers in the world, it gives pride.

“We met quickly after that game [when Shakhtar played City in the Champions League group stage]. He praised the match I made, I thanked him and complimented his team. It was all very fast, nothing more.

“I try not to worry about it. I let my representatives take care of that part. My focus is on Shakhtar, with whom I have my contract."

City have identified Fred as the ideal long-term replacement for Fernandinho, who will be 33 at the end of the season.

Of players that have attempted at least 15 dribbles in the Champions League this season,  Fred has the best success rate (91.3%).
