West Ham sign former Aston Villa midfielder

West Ham have announced the arrival of former Aston Villa midfielder Carlos Sanchez from Italian side Fiorentina.

The Hammers have been looking to bolster their midfield options since Cheikhou Kouyate’s departure to Crystal Palace at the start of the month.

West Ham have engineered Sanchez’s return to the Premier League after a two-year absence, having spent a two-year spell at Villa up until 2016.

The 32-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Espanyol after falling out of favour at Fiorentina and has now penned a two-year deal with West Ham.

“I’m very happy to be here,” he told the club’s official website. I’m very excited and looking forward to achieving lots.

“I decided to come here because, first, it is the Premier League, second, it’s a beautiful club and the fans are always helping the club and, third, for me it’s an amazing opportunity and an amazing project the club are leading, being ambitious and keen to achieve good things."

Manuel Pellegrini’s took their summer dealings to eight new players earlier on deadline day following Lucas Perez’s arrival from Arsenal and have now concluded their business with Sanchez.

The former Aston Villa defensive midfielder endured a nightmare 2018 World Cup, finishing the tournament as the (3+ apps)  lowest WhoScored rated outfielder (5.79 rating).
