Tottenham confirm Bergwijn injury blow

Tottenham have confirmed that Steven Bergwijn is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury in the 1-1 draw with Burnley.

The January arrival made an immediate impact following his move from PSV to Spurs as he netted on his Premier League debut in the 2-0 win over Manchester City.

However, on the eve of Spurs' must-win Champions League meeting with RB Leipzig, the club has confirmed that the Dutchman will undergo a period of rehab as he recovers from a heavy ankle sprain.

"Following assessment and examination by our medical team, we can confirm that Steven Bergwijn suffered a significant sprain to his left ankle during our match against Burnley," a statement read on the club's official website.

"The Netherlands international will now undergo an extended period of rehabilitation where his progress will continue to be assessed."

Bergwijn joins Harry Kane, Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-Min on the sidelines, and his absence is a huge blow to the club's top four hopes.

However, Kane has started individual training as he steps up his recovery from a hamstring strain he sustained in the New Year's Day 1-0 loss at Southampton.
