Aston Villa submit improved offer for Arsenal goalkeeper

Aston Villa have returned with an improved offer for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, claims The Athletic.

Martinez has emerged as a top transfer target for Villa following his superb form at the end of last season.

The 28-year-old finished the campaign as something of a fan favourite at Arsenal after deputising for Bernd Leno while he was out injured.

Dean Smith is desperate to sign a new first-choice shot-stopper after running through four goalkeepers in the Premier League last term.

With Tom Heaton still not at peak fitness following his battle back from long-term injury, Martinez and Manchester United reserve Sergio Romero are in Villa's sights.

Villa had an initial £10m bid rejected by Arsenal at the end of August but their new offer is reportedly much closer to Martinez's £20m valuation.

Martinez starred in Arsenal's FA Cup and Community Shield success but he does not want to be Leno's No.2 now the German is back fit again.

Arsenal have been mulling a new contract for Martinez but know his departure will boost Mikel Arteta's transfer kitty for new signings.

Martinez saved 31 of the 39 shots he faced in the Premier League last season, with a save success rate of 79.5% - the best in the division.
