Alvaro Morata has conceded he was unhappy at Chelsea last season and considered quitting this summer after just one year at the club.
Chelsea signed Morata from Real Madrid 12 months ago after missing out on Romelu Lukaku to rivals Manchester United.
The west London outfit shelled out an initial £58m to sign Morata but the Spain international endured a difficult first season at the club.
Morata missed out on a spot in Spain’s squad for the 2018 World Cup and has now revealed he gave serious thought to leaving in the summer.
“Last year I wasn’t happy. I started well but at the end it was a disaster,” Goal.com quote Morata as saying. “I went on the pitch and did even not know where I was. I considered returning to Spain or Italy.
“But you can’t always escape reality, I left Spain to earn a place at the World Cup and I did not go. It was hard. I’m going to do everything I can to go to the next one, it was a difficult time because I expected to go.
“I didn’t have the best season. The boss tok a decision. I don’t resent [Julen] Lopetegui, I wish him all the best at Real Madrid.”
New Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri wanted to replace Morata with Gonzalo Higuain but has been forced to stick with the 25-year-old.
Morata has started all four Premier League matches for Chelsea this season but has only netted one goal in that time.
Of outfielders that have started a league match for Chelsea this term, only Ross Barkley (6.49) has a lower WhoScored rating than Morata (6.82).
