Manchester United summer signing has exceeded Mourinho’s expectations

Jose Mourinho has admitted that Romelu Lukaku’s fast start to life at Manchester United has even exceeded his own expectations.

Lukaku has made a sensational start to the season after joining United from Everton in a deal worth an initial £75m over the summer.

The Belgium international is the joint-top goalscorer in the Premier League (six goals) and even his manager did not expect Lukaku to be such a force in every single game.

“I knew he would always score goals, I knew he would always score more goals for us than for Everton or West Bromwich Albion,” The Daily Mirror quote Mourinho as saying after their 1-0 win away to Southampton on Saturday.

“That’s logic. But I was not expecting him to be match after match, putting the ball in the net.”

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic to return to first-team action at the start of next year, United are well placed to mount a serious title challenge this season.

Lukaku has scored eight goals in eight matches in all competitions for United, reaching that figure quicker than the likes of Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin Van Persie and Ibrahimovic.
