Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery says he hopes Thiago Motta will reverse his decision and extend his stay at the club beyond the end of the season.
Motta’s agent, Alessandro Canovi, revealed the experienced midfielder would not be looking to renew his deal with the Ligue 1 champions, which is due to expire at the end of this season.
The 34-year-old has spent the last four years with PSG and has been linked with a return to Italy, although Emery insists he hopes to keep the Brazilian-born Italy international beyond the end of this season.
"I feel he is a very important player for PSG this year, and in my opinion he is capable of playing on for a few more years here,” ESPN quote Emery as saying.
“He said what he feels but in six months, when he takes his final decisions – or before then – I believe the club has not lost its opportunity to continue.”
Motta is still unsure whether he wants to continue playing at the highest level or move into coaching next summer. With Adrien Rabiot expected to miss the remainder of 2016, Motta can expect regular game time before the winter break.
The former Inter midfielder has still featured in 11 league games for PSG this season, with eight of those coming as a starter. Indeed, no player averages more passes per Ligue 1 game than Motta this season (91.5).
