Juventus defender couples shock move away

Juventus has announced Medhi Benatia has completed a move to Qatari sports club Al-Duhail.

Benatia has spent the last three years at Juventus but struggled to nail down a regular starting berth at the club during that time.

The 31-year-old has frequently been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past but has now completed a shock move to Al-Duhail.

Al-Duhail, who are managed by Jose Mourinho’s former assistant, Rui Faria, have agreed a deal worth up to €10m (£8.7m) with Juventus.

Juventus re-signed Leonardo Bonucci from AC Milan last summer and the Italian’s return only reduced Benatia’s likely playing time further.

The Morocco international’s best season for Juventus came last term when Bonucci left, but even then he only made 20 appearances in Serie A.

Benatia only made five league appearances for Juventus this season but did average more interceptions per game than any other team-mate (3.2).

Juventus are expected to be without Bonucci for a month after the 31-year-old suffered an ankle injury against Lazio on Sunday but even that has not prevented Benatia from leaving.
