Drogba refuses to play for Montreal

Didier Drogba refused to play for the Montreal Impact in Sunday’s draw with Toronto after initially being named on the bench by manager Mauro Biello.

The 38-year-old, who has recently been linked with a January move to Napoli, was not included in the starting XI that drew 2-2 with Toronto at the weekend.

Drogba was then excluded from the list of players on the bench and the initial report claimed his withdrawal was due to a back injury, although Biello has since confirmed the real reason.

“Didier wasn’t selected to start the game,” ESPN quote Biello as saying after the game. “I spoke with him yesterday he didn’t accept the fact to come off the bench and, in the end, he did not want to be in the 18.”

Of players to have scored at least 10 goals in the last two MLS campaigns only two players have required fewer minutes per goal than Drogba (1 every 120 mins).
