Mourinho hoping to keep Manchester United midfielder

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is still hoping to persuade Marouane Fellaini to stay at Old Trafford.

The Belgian’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has been linked with a move away from the club, with Super Lig pair Besiktas and Fenerbahce monitoring the midfielder.

Fellaini, who is currently sidelined win an injury sustained in a the 2-0 loss to Tottenham, has shown no indication that he is prepared to extend his stay with United.

Mourinho is hoping to have the 30-year-old back available next month as he steps up his recovery from a knee injury, but the Portuguese manager is unsure whether Fellaini will still be a United player next season.

“Is he going to stay or leave? I don't know,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“I want him to stay, the club want him to stay. The process – negotiations, numbers, distances between the offer and what he wants – I really don't know.

“He's still a young player. His injury, he had a little surgery but minor surgery, and he will be back to play again in a couple of weeks.

“So if we proceed in the Champions League after Sevilla, I think he will be ready for a hypothetical quarter-final, a hypothetical FA Cup semi-final, for the last couple of months of our Premier League fight.”

Manchester United travel to Crystal Palace on Monday night and could find themselves in third and 19 points behind Manchester City should results go against them this weekend.
