Manchester United to beat Liverpool to new defender

Manchester United have fended off competition from rivals Liverpool to re-sign Burnley defender Michael Keane for more than 10 times what they sold him for two years ago, reports The Daily Mail.

Louis van Gaal sanctioned Keane’s departure to Burnley in January 2015 for £2m but the England international has enjoyed a thoroughly impressive campaign for the Clarets and is now on the verge of securing a return to Old Trafford for £25m.

Keane has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool and Everton throughout the season as both Merseyside clubs look to bolster their defensive options in the summer, but the allure of returning to United has worked in Jose Mourinho’s favour.

The 24-year-old has been in immense form for Burnley this season and even carried that on to the international stage, delivering two assured performances for Gareth Southgate’s side earlier this year.

In fact, Keane has won more aerial duels than any other defender in Europe’s top five leagues (152) this season.
