Tottenham win race for West Ham target

Tottenham have successfully hi-jacked West Ham's deal for Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes, claims the London Evening Standard.

Fernandes is due to undergo his medical with Tottenham on Monday ahead of an initial 18-month loan deal.

Jose Mourinho's side will have an option to make Fernandes' stay permanent for a further £40m in the summer of 2021.

Fernandes was expected to join West Ham earlier in the month but talks stalled between Benfica and the Hammers.

Tottenham have moved quickly to get a deal over the line to bolster Mourinho's depleted midfield for the second half of the season.

Moussa Sissoko has been ruled out until April with a knee injury suffered against Southampton and neither Harry Winks nor Eric Dier are firing on all cylinders.

Fernandes has struggled for regular playing time at Benfica since breaking into the first-team last season.

The 21-year-old has only made 13 league appearances since the beginning of last season and was hooked at half-time on his last start in any competition.
