Ronald Koeman wants to make Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum a key player for Barcelona next season, reports Sky Sports.
Wijnaldum has entered the final 12 months of his current Liverpool deal and the Premier League champions currently do not plan to offer the midfielder a new one.
His future at Anfield has been the topic of hot debate as his departure would accomodate Thiago's arrival from Bayern Munich.
As things stand Liverpool will only step up their interest in Thiago if they can offload Wijnaldum and Koeman wants to reunite with the midfielder at Barcelona.
Koeman left his role as Netherlands manager to take over at former club Barcelona earlier this summer and has earmarked his compatriot as a top transfer target.
The 29-year-old has spent the last four years at Liverpool and has been a key player for Jurgen Klopp over the last two seasons.
Barcelona have already sold Ivan Rakitic back to Sevilla and are in talks to allow Arturo Vidal to reunite with Inter boss Antonio Conte.
Vidal's departure would free up extra room for Barcelona to raid Liverpool for Wijnaldum and allow Klopp to land Thiago.
Wijnaldum started 35 of a 38 league games last season for the Premier League champions and weighed in with four goals that were worth an additional four points.
Moreover, of players to have started at least 25 Premier League matches only Rodri (92.9%) had a better pass success rate than Wijnaldum (90.8%).
