Manchester City veteran poised for new deal

Manchester City will hand Fernandinho a new contract before the year is out despite signing his long-term replacement, claims The Sun.

The Premier League champions broke their club-transfer record to sign Rodrigo from Atletico Madrid in a £62.5m deal earlier this month.

Rodrigo has been earmarked as Fernandinho’s long-term replacement and brings an end to Pep Guardiola’s 12-month search.

Fernandinho struggled with injuries towards the end of last season and will almost certainly miss the start of the upcoming campaign due to his commitments at this summer’s Copa America.

The 34-year-old has entered the final year of his current City contract but Guardiola has sanctioned a new 12-month extension for the defensive midfielder.

Only Granit Xhaka (4624) and Cesar Azpilicueta (4554) have completed more passes than Fernandinho (4472) over the last two Premier League campaigns.
