Liverpool prepare contract for known Chelsea target

Liverpool are looking to steal Napoli forward Dries Mertens from under the nose of Chelsea as Jurgen Klopp seeks to improve his attack, reports TuttoMercatoWeb via TEAMtalk.

The Blues were heavily linked with a move for Mertens, who is out of contract this summer, in January as head coach Frank Lampard eyed up attacking reinforcements.

However, a deal for Mertens never happened and he remained in Italy, but Chelsea are expected to return for the 32-year-old when his current Napoli deal expires.

Yet the Blues face competition from Liverpool for Mertens, with Klopp turning his attention to the free agent.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for RB Leipzig's Timo Werner, while PSG star Kylian Mbappe is another rumoured target for the Premier League leaders.

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic is impacting Liverpool's financial power in the transfer market, however, so Klopp is looking at cut price options in the market, with Mertens fitting the bill.

Mertens hasn't been afforded a regular starting role for Napoli this season, with the Belgium international making just 12 league starts.

In his limited game time, though, Mertens has scored six goals and provided four assists to return a WhoScored rating of 6.93.
