Liverpool approach for Southampton forward rejected

Southampton have rejected Liverpool’s enquiry for striker Shane Long, according to ESPN.

Liverpool are keen to bolster their offensive options this month and reportedly sounded out the Saints striker.

With Divock Origi, Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge all on the sidelines, Jurgen Klopp has previously admitted he may be forced to dip into the transfer market.

The Reds have struggled for goals this season, which was evident in their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday, with their top goalscorer Christian Benteke (6) finding it difficult to get into the starting XI.

Long’s energy up front would certainly fit into Klopp’s mould of player, but it remains to be seen if a striker that has never reached double figures in an English top-flight campaign would solve Liverpool’s woes.

Only Graziano Pelle (6) has scored more league goals for Southampton this season than Long (5), who has only started nine games for Ronald Koeman’s side thus far.
