Barcelona star adds to club’s injury woes

Barcelona have announced Ousmane Dembele is out injured for roughly five weeks with a hamstring injury.

The LaLiga champions have endured a nightmare start to the season after losing their opening game 1-0 to Athletic Club on Friday night.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are already on the treatment table and now Dembele has joined them on the sidelines.

“A medical examination on Ousmane Dembele has diagnosed a strain of his left hamstring,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

“The Frenchman is set to be out for approximately five weeks as a result.”

Barcelona now face a shortage of offensive options after offloading Philippe Coutinho to Bayern Munich on a season-long loan deal on Monday.

Summer signing Antoine Griezmann will now be required to step up in the absence of his aforementioned teammates.

The France international endured a debut to forget against Athletic Club but should now be moved centrally with Suarez injured.

Dembele has struggled to stay fit for prolonged periods since joining Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in a £135.5m deal in the summer of August 2017.

The 22-year-old has only started 33 of a possible 77 league matches for Barcelona and returned 22 goals and assists (11 goals, 11 assists).

Of players that have started more than 25 LaLiga matches in that time, only two players require fewer minutes per successful dribble than Dembele (one every 24.7 minutes of action).
