Everton hold talks with former Chelsea boss Ancelotti

Former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has landed in Merseyside for face-to-face talks with Everton about their vacant post, claims Sky Sports.

Everton have confirmed Duncan Ferguson will oversee his third game in interim charge of the club for Wednesday’s EFL Cup quarter-final with Leicester.

The Toffees sacked Marco Silva at the start of the month and it quickly emerged they had no clear vision how to replace the Portuguese.

Talks with Vitor Pereira quickly went cold after the 51-year-old opted to stay with Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG.

Former Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta was linked with the vacant post at Goodison Park but now appears set to leave his job as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City for another of his former clubs, Arsenal.

Everton have now earmarked Ancelotti as their first-choice candidate to succeed Silva after the Italian was sacked by Napoli last week.

Ancelotti previously spent two years at Chelsea where he won the Premier League and FA Cup double in his first season in charge.

The charming Italian has since enjoyed a fantastic career in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Napoli, though his reputation has diminished in recent years.

Given Ferguson’s no-nonsense approach to management appears to have brought the best out of Everton in their last two matches, opting for someone as calm as Ancelotti would be the total opposite.

Facing Everton has curiously been one of Ancelotti’s most difficult assignments as a manager. In fact, against no team has faced more times without picking up a single victory than Everton (six meetings).
