Leicester to make £15m bid for Southampton defender

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers wants to sign £15m-rated Southampton centre-back Jannick Vestergaard this month, claims The Sun.

Rodgers has made bringing in a new centre-back before the January transfer window closes a priority to provide back-up for Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu.

Wes Morgan has dropped down the pecking order at Leicester this season and, at 36, is very much on the decline.

Leicester had a bid rejected for Juventus defender Merih Demiral at the start of the window before the Turkey international suffered a serious knee injury.

The Foxes have now set their sights on a surprise move for out of favour Southampton defender Vestegaard.

Vestergaard has spent the last 18 months at Southampton following a reported £18m move from German side Gladbach in the summer of 2018.

However, the 27-year-old has been a relative disappointment for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side and has been limited to just 12 league appearances this season.

Using his towering frame, Vestergaard has won 70.9% of the aerial duels he has contested in the competition this term.
