Chelsea announce arrival of Higuain

Chelsea have announced they have signed Gonzalo Higuain from Juventus on loan for the remainder of the season.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri wanted to reunite with Higuain last summer but Chelsea were reluctant to sign someone the wrong side of 30.

Juventus have now activated their recall clause in Higuain's loan stint with AC Milan in order to allow the 31-year-old to reunite with Sarri at Chelsea.

“When the opportunity to join Chelsea presented itself I had to take it,” he told the club’s official website.

“It’s a team I’ve always liked that has a lot of history, a wonderful stadium and they play in the Premier League, a league I’ve always wanted to play in.

“I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch. I can’t wait to start and I hope to adapt as soon as possible.”

Juventus wanted Chelsea to accept the same loan agreement as Milan, but Sarri's side have successfully managed to renegotiate new terms.

The Serie A giants have announced that Chelsea can extend Higuain's loan deal at the end of the season by a further 12 months at the cost of €18m (£15.7m), while also retaining an option to buy for €36m (£31.4m) payable in two years.

Higuain's arrival paves the way for Alvaro Morata to end his Chelsea nightmare, with the Spain international expected to re-sign for boyhood club Atletico Madrid in the coming days.

However, Chelsea missed the deadline to register Higuain in time for Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham.

Higuain and Sarri spent one year together at Napoli and it resulted in the Argentina international enjoying his best ever season in front of goal.

Higuain scored 36 goals in 35 league games during his sole season with Sarri in 2015/16, but has only netted 46 times in his subsequent 88 Serie A matches.
