Manchester City and Liverpool keen on Southampton defender

Manchester City and Liverpool will look to improve their respective squads with the signing of Ryan Bertrand this summer, reports ESPN.

Both Premier League sides are in the market to strengthen at left-back at the end of the season and have earmarked Bertrand as a possible target.

The England international is a first team regular for Southampton and it would cost a hefty fee to convince the south coast side to sell, but City and Liverpool are willing to spend big to bolster once the transfer window opens.

Saints would be reluctant to cash in on the 27-year-old, but have ample cover at left-back in youth academy graduates Matt Targett and Sam McQueen.

City have been linked with a host of left-backs ahead of the summer, with Alex Sandro, Benjamin Mendy and Danny Rose, among others, all touted as possible arrivals at the Etihad Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, has been forced to play James Milner at left-back and while the former England international has not disappointed, the Liverpool boss is looking to add a specialist in the position, with the Reds also linked with a move for youngster Ryan Sessegnon.
