Chelsea sign Leicester midfielder

Chelsea have announced they have signed Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater on a five-year deal until June 2022.

Antonio Conte's side were heavily linked with a move for Drinkwater throughout August and finally made a breakthrough in talks for the England international before wrapping up a deal in the early hours of Friday morning.

Chelsea, who have been a midfielder short since selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United at the start of last month, have reportedly paid in the region of £35m for the Leicester ace in a move that will reunite Drinkwater with N’Golo Kante.

“I am delighted to be a Chelsea player and can’t wait to get started,” Drinkwater told the club’s official website. “It has been a long journey to get here but I am very happy and am looking forward to helping the club win more trophies.”

Drinkwater has not featured for Leicester this season after picking up an injury in pre-season but he will now bolster Conte’s midfield options, having already signed Monaco ace Tiemoue Bakayoko this summer.

In the last three Premier League campaigns, only Kante (339) has won possession in the midfield third more times than Drinkwater (331).
