European duo emerge as shock favourites for Manchester United outcast Lingard

Roma and Atletico Madrid are surprise favourites for Jesse Lingard if the Manchester United midfielder leaves the club this summer, claims ESPN.

Lingard's stock has fallen significantly in the last 12 months and he is now fighting to save his place for club and country ahead of the summer.

The 27-year-old's current deal is due to expire at the end of next season but United have an option to prolong his stay by a further 12 months.

Lingard has rankled United with his behaviour on and off the pitch in the last year and is running out of chances to salvage his career at Old Trafford.

The England international's preference is to stay at his boyhood club but he has not ruled out the possibility of leaving this summer.

Lingard, who recently linked up with super agent Mino Raiola, has even landed on the radar of Roma and Atletico.

Chris Smalling's career at United was coming to a crossroads but he has been a revelation on loan at Roma this season and the Serie A side even want to make his switch permanent.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still thinks Lingard has a huge part to play in United's future but Bruno Fernandes' arrival from Benfica will only push him further down the pecking order.

Lingard has gone 33 appearances without a goal in the Premier League since December 2018 and has had 32 attempts on goal in that time.
