Chelsea defender a doubt for FA Cup semi-final

Gary Cahill has emerged as a huge doubt for Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday after being hospitalised in the week with a mystery illness, reports The Daily Telegraph.

The England international was one of three Chelsea players that had come down with a bout of illness at the weekend during their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United and has now spent two nights in hospital recovering.

Cahill was released from hospital on Thursday after receiving treatment and tests but his participation on Saturday remains in doubt as Antonio Conte ponders replacing one of his first choice centre-backs with Kurt Zouma or John Terry.

The 31-year-old, who was named in the PFA Team of the Year on Thursday, has been in sublime form for Chelsea this season following Conte’s appointment and his absence would be a real blow to their chances of overcoming rivals Spurs.

Cahill has not only been a reliable defender this season but he has also proved a threat in the oppositions box as well. In fact, he has scored as many league goals this season as he had managed in his previous three campaigns combined (4).
