Paris Saint-Germain deny bidding for Memphis Depay

Paris Saint-Germain director of football Patrick Kluivert has denied the reigning Ligue 1 champions made a late bid to hi-jack Lyon’s move for Manchester United outcast Memphis Depay.

Lyon announced the arrival of Memphis at the end of last week after several weeks of negotiating with United, which concluded with the French side agreeing to a deal that could be worth up £21m.

In an added twist to the transfer saga, it emerged after the deal was finalised that Memphis had turned down a late move from PSG despite the fact Unai Emery’s side were reportedly willing to pay more money.

However, while Kluivert has confirmed he spoke with Memphis, he has denied any attempt to hi-jack Lyon’s deal.

“I know Memphis very well,” Kluivert, a former Netherlands international, told L’Equipe, via ESPN. “I spoke with him but did not try to sign him. I am very glad he is playing for Lyon now. I did speak with him but it was not an attempt to try to get him.”

Memphis came off the bench in Lyon’s 3-1 win over Marseille on Sunday to make his debut for Bruno Genesio’s side in the final 11 minutes of the match.

It is the most he has played in club football since getting 24 minutes in United’s 4-1 win over Fenerbahce towards the end of October.
