Arsenal are interested in signing Southampton captain Jose Fonte, according to ESPN.
Fonte, 32, is keen to join Manchester United this summer but the Portugal international has also now received an approach from Arsene Wenger’s side.
United can only make a formal move for the experienced defender after they have successfully sold one of their existing players first but they are finding that harder than expected due to player wage demands.
Arsenal are in the market for a new centre-back following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel and have already been linked with the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Omer Toprak.
Only Laurent Koscielny (219) and Ashley Williams (200) have made more interceptions in the Premier League since August 2014 (Fonte 199).
