Tottenham to demand £40m after Alderweireld’s release clause expires

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will demand close to £40m for defender Toby Alderweireld after his release clause expires on Friday, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Alderweireld has entered the final 12 months of his current Tottenham deal and clubs can currently sign the Belgium international for just £25m due to a release clause in his existing terms.

The 30-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to both Manchester United and Roma this summer but they have instead pursued other targets.

Time is running out for potential suitors to sign Alderweireld for a cut-price fee, as his release clause expires on Friday and after that Tottenham can demand what they want.

Alderweireld is considered one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and Levy will play hardball over his fee despite the fact he could leave the club for free next summer.

Tottenham are expected to slap a £40m valuation on Alderweireld’s head if he is still at the club after his release clause expires.

After dropping out of favour midway through the 2017/18 campaign over a disagreement about his contract, Alderweireld returned to his best form last season.

Alderweireld completed more accurate long balls per game (7.1) than any other outfielder in the Premier League last season.
