Borussia Dortmund bid €20m for Belgium international

Borussia Dortmund have stepped up their interest in Axel Witsel and tabled a €20m (£17.8m) bid for the Tianjin Quanjian midfielder, claims HLN Sport.

Witsel has spent the last 18 months in China after making a surprise £17m move from Russian giants Zenit in January 2017.

The 29-year-old turned in some impressive displays for Belgium at the 2018 World Cup and has now emerged as a serious target for Dortmund.

The Bundesliga outfit already spent big to sign Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney before the World Cup but still want to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

Witsel is open to returning to Europe this summer but will have to take a massive financial hit in order to secure a move, as Dortmund are not capable of matching his current salary.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with a move for the towering midfielder, but Dortmund have made the first move to secure his services.

Of players that started at least four matches at the 2018 World Cup, only two players have a better pass success rate than Witsel (94.2%).
