Chelsea make contact with Bayern Munich star

Chelsea have made contact with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski as they look to find a replacement for Diego Costa, reports The Daily Mirror.

Antonio Conte has told Costa he is free to leave the club this summer as he does not feature in his plans going forward and Chelsea are determined to land a world-class replacement.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move to re-sign Romelu Lukaku but are reluctant to match Everton’s stunning £100m valuation and are now sounding out alternative options.

Lewandowski is reportedly unhappy at Bayern and his agent has recently hit out at the Bundesliga champions after they failed to support his client's aim of finishing last season as the league’s top goalscorer.

Manchester United have reportedly also spoken with Lewandowski’s agent about a potential move this summer, although it is believed the Poland international would prefer a move to London if he were to join a Premier League side.

However, it would require a substantial fee to prize Lewandowski away from the Allianz Arena as he still has four years remaining on his existing Bayern deal.

Chelsea will be reluctant to pay over the odds for the Bayern No.9 as the Premier League champions are making a conscious effort to move away from signing older players. Lewandowski will be 29 in August.

Lewandowski has scored 30 goals in each of the last two Bundesliga seasons but was beaten to the top goalscorer gong by Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (31).

However, Lewandowski would have perhaps been streaks clear of his counterpart had he not missed more clear-cut goalscoring opportunities than any other player in the Bundesliga last season (27).
