Madrid target signs new deal at Athletic

Athletic Club have announced head coach Ernesto Valverde has put pen to paper on a new 12-month deal amid speculation linking him with the Real Madrid post.

Valverde, 52, is in his second stint as manager of the Basque-based side and had emerged as a potential candidate to replace Zinedine Zidane at the end of the season.

However, the former Valencia and Villarreal head coach has renewed with Athletic for a further year to quash those rumours and is quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “I’m very happy to be here for Athletic.”

Since taking over at the start of the 2013/14 campaign Valverde has led Athletic to their first piece of silverware in 29 years and boosts an impressive win ratio in La Liga, having won nearly half of his 103 games in charge (45.6%) of his second stint.
