Former Liverpool midfielder wanted by Championship side

Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has emerged as a potential candidate to succeed Mick McCarthy as Ipswich Town manager, reports the Sun.

McCarthy spectacularly quit the Tractor Boss last week in his post-match press conference following a 1-0 win over Barnsley and the team are now on the lookout for a new boss.

Ipswich owner Marcus Evans is drawing up a shortlist to take over the reins at Portman Road and has sounded out Gerrard.

The 37-year-old is currently Liverpool U18s manager and combines his role for the Reds as a pundit for BT Sport.

Gerrard was linked with MK Dons last year, but elected to start his coaching tutelage at Merseyside under the watchful eye of Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp.

However, Evans won’t rush into any appointment, as caretaker boss Bryan Klug revealed: “Marcus is going through a process and I have said I will cover for as long as he needs.

“Hopefully we can all help him to get the right management team in here that is the right fit for the club.”

Liverpool U18s have lost their last three league matches, succumbing to defeats to Newcastle, West Brom and Sunderland, and face Manchester United next week.

Following a 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Ipswich currently sit 12th in the Championship.
