Manchester City star close to new deal

Fernandinho has revealed he is close to triggering another 12 months at Manchester City.

The Brazilian midfielder is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and free to discuss a Bosman transfer with foreign clubs.

However, the 34-year-old's preference is to stay at City and there are clauses in his contract that automatically entitle him to another season.

"When I renewed at the end of 2018, we put a clause that if I reach certain goals, my contract would be renewed automatically," Fernandinho told ESPN this week.

"Conversations have already started, we talked about it last month. I am close to reaching those goals and renewing the contract but we can only confirm it after signing.

"The club have already shown interest in me staying, I have also shown [my interest] in staying."

Fernandinho has been asked to drop in at centre-back for the majority of this season to cover for City's injury crisis in defence.

The veteran has since emerged as City's best centre-back with Aymeric Laporte out injured and demonstrated his class in their 3-1 win away to city rivals Manchester United on Tuesday.

Despite attempting to manage Fernandinho's work load last season, only two City outfielders have featured in more Premier League minutes than the Brazilian this term (1485).

Furthermore, only Virgil van Dijk (80.8) and Fikayo Tomori (77.4) average more passes per game than Fernandinho (76.2) in the Premier League this season.
