Manchester City sweating on Gabriel Jesus’ foot injury

Manchester City will learn the full extent of Gabriel Jesus’ ankle injury on Tuesday after the January arrival was forced off in the first half of their 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Monday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side moved up into second in the Premier League and cut Chelsea’s lead to eight points but their third league win in a row came at a cost with Jesus now set for a spell on the sidelines.

Jesus, 19, had made a breathtaking start to life in England after finally joining up with his City teammates last month following a £27m deal from Palmeiras last summer but could only last 15 minutes of Monday’s outing against Bournemouth.

The Brazil international picked up an ankle injury before being replaced by City’s record goalscorer Sergio Aguero and Guardiola is ‘praying’ the injury is not a severe one.

“It will be the morning before we know the impact,” The Daily Mail quote Guardiola as saying after the match. “I can’t say anything else. We will just pray tonight it is not a big issue.”

Of players to have scored at least one goal in the Premier League this season only Southampton January signing Manolo Gabbiadini (1 every 54.3 mins) requires fewer minutes per goal than Jesus (1 every 67.7 mins).
