Madrid enter race for defender

Real Madrid are set to enter the race for highly rated Everton centre-back John Stones, reports the Daily Mail.

Stones has emerged as one of the finest defenders in Europe and has attracted interest from Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona.

However, it now appears Madrid are prepared to battle for the 21-year-old, who they see as the ideal addition to the side with veteran Pepe no longer considered a key member of the team.

Former manager Rafa Benitez had urged the club to keep tabs on the youngster and was hoping to lure him to Spain this month, though his sacking suggests this will no longer happen.

Nevertheless, with Madrid looking to strengthen, the will likely test Everton's resolve to retain Stones' services at the end of the season.

The Toffees rejected three bids from Chelsea for the defender last summer, who is reportedly valued at around £40m.
