Premier League trio earn first England call-ups

The Football Association have announced Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tammy Abraham and Joe Gomez have received their first senior England call-ups for friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

Gareth Southgate has named his 25-man squad for the final international matches of the year when they host Germany at Wembley on 10 November before returning to the home of football to play Brazil four days later.

The England manager is keen to experiment with the national pool after securing a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia next summer and has handed out call-ups to three rookies.

Joe Gomez has made the most of Nathaniel Clyne’s long-term back injury to establish himself as a regular in the Liverpool defence this season, while Tammy Abraham has also found regular game time at Swansea after joining on loan from Chelsea over the summer.

Another Chelsea loanee, Loftus-Cheek, completes the debutants after getting a string of games together for Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace.

Despite the fact they are bottom of the table, Loftus-Cheek is completing more dribbles per 90 (4.2) than any other Premier League player to make at least five appearances this season.

Manchester United veteran Ashley Young has also been named in the squad after establishing himself as a regular under Mourinho this season.

The 32-year-old hasn’t featured for England in more than four years, while Danny Rose, recently back from a long-term knee injury, also returns to the international scene.

Harry Winks has also been named in Southgate’s squad after impressing in Tottenham’s midfield in recent matches, but there is no place for Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who has only managed 13 minutes of league action this term.

Daniel Sturridge, Chris Smalling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are other notable absentees from Southgate’s squad after all struggling for regular playing time at their respective clubs this season.
