Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will activate a one-year extension in David de Gea’s contract this summer, reports the Sun.
The Spain international is a long-term target for Real Madrid and has just two years left to run on his current deal at Old Trafford.
United, though, are prepared to extend his stay until 2020 and are willing to offer the goalkeeper a bumper pay rise to remain in Manchester.
Mourinho’s side added a 12-month extension clause in De Gea’s contract when he penned a new deal in 2015, with that set to be activated once the campaign comes to an end.
De Gea came close to leaving United in the summer of 2015, but a fax machine malfunction saw a switch to Real Madrid fall through.
The La Liga giants have been keen admirers of the 26-year-old for quite some time, but have switched their interest to Chelsea shotstopper Thibaut Courtois.
Courtois has made no secret of his desire to return to Madrid in the past and Chelsea could look to sell in the summer.
