Liverpool approach Barcelona for new goalkeeper

Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen this summer and have approached the Spanish giants for his services, claims Mundo Deportivo.

Jurgen Klopp has made signing a new goalkeeper a priority this summer in the wake of Lloris Karius’ horrific performance in last weekend’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Karius was at fault for two of the three goals Madrid scored and Klopp is now scouring Europe for a new first choice goalkeeper for the upcoming campaign.

Liverpool’s first choice targets are Roma ace Alisson and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but both will come at a huge cost.

Roma are reportedly demanding £79m for Alisson, while Oblak has a €100m release clause and Atletico will accept nothing less than that.

Klopp is now considering a shock move for Cillessen, who has spent the last two years warming the bench for Barcelona after a €15m switch from Ajax in 2016.

The 29-year-old has waited patiently for his first-team opportunities during that time and been immensely professional even though he has deserved greater playing time.

Barcelona are not interested in selling the Netherlands international, which could force Liverpool to make Cillessen the most expensive goalkeeper of all-time by triggering his €60m (£52.5m) release clause.

Cillessen has only started four games across league and European competition in two years at Barcelona.
