Neville appointed Valencia head coach

Valencia have announced Gary Neville will take over first-team responsibilities until the end of the season.

The former Manchester United captain will not take charge until after Valencia host Barcelona at the weekend and his first task will be to overcome Lyon in the Champions League.

Phil Neville has been taking charge of first-team training since Nuno resigned at the weekend and will return to his No.2 position alongside his brother.

Sky Sports have also released a statement to confirm Neville's role as a pundit will end with immediate effect, although he will remain on Roy Hodgson's coaching staff with England.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity with Valencia. Valencia are a huge football club of immense standing and I know my time as a player the passion and dedication of the Valencia fans," Neville told the club's official website.

"I am really looking forward to working with the club's talented group of players and I'am excited about the challenge ahead."

Valencia are currently one point behind Gent in third place in their Champions League group and will have to find a way to score past a Lyon defence that has kept the joint-most clean sheets across Europe’s top five leagues this season (10).
