West Ham make breakthrough in pursuit of new striker

West Ham have made quick progress in a deal to sign Frankfurt striker Sebastien Haller, claims The Daily Mail.

The Hammers only made an approach for Haller on Wednesday after missing out on Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez to Valencia.

However, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have already made a breakthrough in talks with the Bundesliga outfit and are now confident of sealing a £36m deal in the coming days.

West Ham have also overcome their biggest stumbling point in convincing Haller to forego European football in order to play for the Hammers.

The 25-year-old, who was linked with a move to Manchester United earlier this year, has reportedly agreed terms on a four-year deal with West Ham.

Pellegrini’s side have been forced to accelerate their pursuit of a new striker after selling Marko Arnautovic to China at the start of the week.

Haller has spent the last two years in Germany and was a revelation for Frankfurt last season, finishing the 2018/19 campaign as the WhoScored player of the tournament (7+ appearances) in the Europa League (7.72).

With Haller’s move to West Ham expected to go through imminently, Frankfurt would have received more than £100m in player sales this summer.

The Bundesliga outfit sold Luka Jovic to Real Madrid in a €65m deal earlier in the window and will now need to reshape their attacking options for the new campaign.

Haller scored 15 goals and registered nine assists in 29 league appearances for Frankfurt last season and won more aerial duels than any other player in the Bundesliga (201).
