Arsenal have moved their attentions to Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez, according to The Daily Mail.
Arsene Wenger is determined to land a new defender before the transfer window shuts in two weeks after losing Per Mertesacker and Gabriel to long-term injuries.
The Gunners were beaten 4-3 by Liverpool on the opening weekend of the new season with inexperienced duo Calum Chambers and Rob Holding forming the heart of their defence.
A deal to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi has stalled this week and Arsenal now look like they have moved on to Gimenez, although it’s hard to imagine them meeting Atletico’s £40m valuation.
Last season only Diego Godin (236) completed more clearances in the league and Europe for Atletico (Gimenez – 171).
